Sex.com: The fascinating history of the most coveted porn site
The history of the famous website Sex.com is intriguing and exciting. This platform, which offers erotic images, videos and gifs to users, has had a tumultuous journey to reach its current popularity.
Legal battle over domain names
Obtaining the "sex.com" domain name was the subject of much controversy and a memorable legal battle, notably recounted in the book Sex.compublished in 2007 by journalist Kieren McCarthy.
In October 1995, Gary Kremen was awarded the domain name "sex.com" after registering it with Network Solutions. However, too focused on the development of his other company, Match, he did not initially capitalize on this domain.
Stephen M. Cohen, having fraudulently convinced Network Solutions to transfer ownership of the domain to him using false documents, then illegally seized it.
Kremen begins a five-year legal battle to regain authorship of sex.com. The Cohen camp's numerous appeals only served to increase costs and delays, without changing the final outcome: Kremen finally triumphed in court.
After losing the legal battle in 2006, Cohen retreated to Mexico, while a warrant was issued for his arrest in the United States. Our protagonist now claims to be living in poverty, while maintaining his position in the case.
Further information inculpating Cohen was later uncovered, but the Sex.com site he had operated against the law remained permanently off-limits to him.
14 million euros for a remarkable domain name
Put up for auction in 2006, the domain name "sex.com" found a buyer for nothing less than 14 million euros. As a result, it has become one of the most expensive estates ever sold.
It wasn't until 2012, however, that Sex.com really took off and became a particularly popular platform.
Pinterest for porn
Sex.com is often compared to Pinterest, but for adults only. The site is a harmonious blend of porn site and image-sharing social network.
It features an impressive archive of pornographic photos, videos and gifs that users can bookmark by creating personalized collections.
What's more, members can subscribe to other users, like their content, leave comments or share naughty images with them. The main differences between Sex.com and Pinterest are the latter's infinite scrolling, whereas Sex.com opts for pagination.
GIF pornography
- While some may find pornographic GIFs somewhat outdated, Sex.com integrates this form of content for those who prefer moving images to videos.
- The home page presents the best content of the past week, but also offers a choice to filter according to other criteria.
- The GIFs are short and varied, with a source often attached to show where the erotic scenes come from.
It is undeniable that Sex.com made web history with its legal battle over the coveted domain name and its innovative formula combining social networking and adult sites.
